After search engine, OpenAI plans to introduce internal browser

After launching its search engine earlier this month, OpenAI is looking to launch its internal browser, the information reported. If this happens, OpenAI will be put in direct competition with Google Chrome. The report also stated that the OpenAI browser would be combined with its chatbot and would deliver much more refined responses and results. The company has discussed its upcoming product with app developers and websites such as Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline, which may have previewed its prototype or design, according to the report.

Launching a web browser would enhance the company’s reputation, especially as it is already a leader in artificial intelligence following the launch of ChatGPT. Notably, the company has also entered the search market with SearchGPT, a feature available to premium users.

A sweet spot

While OpenAI’s bowser is only in the planning phase, it’s currently a sweet spot. Since the upcoming browser will compete with Google Chrome, it current trial is a cherry on the cake. The US Justice Department has recommended significant changes to Google’s structure and operations, including the potential sale of the Chrome browser, as part of efforts to dismantle its dominance of internet search. These proposals come after a landmark court decision in August, in which a federal judge ruled that Google had illegally held a monopoly on search services.

Google controls about 90 percent of the online search market, and Chrome, a key way to get Google searches in front of Internet users, controls more than 50 percent of the US browser market.

“Google’s illegal conduct has deprived competitors not only of critical distribution channels but also of distribution partners that might otherwise enable competitors to enter these markets in new and innovative ways,” the DoJ said.

The ongoing lawsuit against Google, which is causing Google to sell Google Chrome, makes it the biggest opportunity for OpenAI to make its move.

Search GPT

According to OpenAI, users can get quick and timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would previously have had to go to a search engine for. “This blends the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of current sports scores, news, stock quotes and more,” OpenAI added. ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on what you ask, or you can manually choose to search by clicking the web search icon.

It is currently available to all ChatGPT Plus and Team users. OpenAI will also roll out the feature to all of its free users in the coming months.
