Mesa County to operate under new classification

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Mesa County is getting another classification.

The county classification established by the state legislature indicates the salary of local county officials such as the sheriff, coroner, etc.

In 2016, the county moved from a Class 2 category to a Class 1D.

This classification has been around for almost a decade but the salaries of county officials are not sitting where they should be.

The Mesa County District Attorney led an effort to have a proper classification made for the category.

DA Dan Rubinstein said, “I was able to pull together some data on what the pay would be if we were properly classified and compare it to what the wages are in other jurisdictions. Sure enough, if we reclassified to a 1A category, all those wages would be deposited appropriately, and we would likely get good candidates to run.”

The DA says having the proper classification will help draw more people into key positions within the county, such as sheriffs and police officers because their salaries will be in line with what they should be making.
