Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 gaming GPU will be dead by the end of 2024, says leak

It looks like it’s the end of the road for Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070as production is reportedly winding down to make way for the next generation of Blackwell GPUs. If this latest rumor is to be believed, production of the RTX 4070 will stop before the end of 2024, and it’s already slowing down.

We are waiting Nvidia to launch its new RTX 5000 range of graphics cards at CES in January 2025, and it now looks like RTX 5070 will be part of the launch, although it will be released a few weeks later than that RTX 5090. If Nvidia is indeed winding down production of the RTX 4070, it would indicate that the RTX 5070 is waiting in the wings.

The latest rumor follows earlier leaks that RTX 4060 discontinuedand comes from the same source, which is BoardChannels forum in China (requires login). In one translation of the post on Videocardz, and beyond discussion on the Japanese technology blog Gazlog, it looks very much like both RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super nearing the end of the line.

According to the post, supply of these GPUs decreased “in Q3 2024 (July to September), but is expected to decrease further in Q4 (October to December), with shipments scheduled to end in late December.” The post also adds that the very last shipments of the cards will be “around January 2025,” warning that “supply will not be very high.”

Most of the rest of Nvidia’s Ada gaming GPU lineup is already in its swan song as well, if this information is correct. The RTX 4070 Ti Super reportedly “expected to clear in November,” which would explain why some companies are trying to clear inventory, as we saw in this MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super offer recently.

In the meantime stock off RTX 4090 is already drying up, with the GPU becoming increasingly difficult to find in stock, and the post on BoardChannels warns that “most brands of graphics card manufacturers only have tail stock” of RTX 4080 Super“which may be exhausted by November, and there may be no goods to sell in December.” Basically, don’t ask for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 graphics card for Christmas; it is better to wait for the new GPUs, which are expected to arrive in January 2025.

If this rumor is true, it shows that Nvidia is taking a very different approach with the Blackwell launch than it did with Ada. When the RTX 4000 series was first released, there was still an ample supply of many Ampere RTX 3000 GPUs in most stores, which muddied the market, especially when the prices of the RTX 4000 series were initially so high. This time, however, it looks like Nvidia is clearing as much RTX 4000 stock as possible, so the new RTX 5000 series has a clean run ahead of it.
