Nestled among the breathtaking beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, Lost River State Park in West Virginia, near Mathias, offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact, I recently had the pleasure of visiting this, one of the most remote West Virginia State Parksand it was exactly the peaceful, quiet, nature-filled experience I was hoping for!

Lost River State Park, located in Hardy County, sits on a ridge between the Lost River Valley and the George Washington National Forest. The journey to reach this hidden gem is an adventure in itself, with winding roads leading to picturesque views at every turn, all the way up to the park.

I think it is one of the best state parks in West Virginia.

Originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Lost River State Park offers a stunning example of the era’s meticulously crafted stonework along with rustic log cabins and cabins that blend harmoniously into the natural surroundings.

With over 3,700 acres of pristine wilderness to explore, Lost River State Park offers a plethora of activities for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Hiking enthusiasts have plenty to choose from, with various trails of varying difficulty winding through forests and rising to stunning views.

In fact, the picturesque view of Cranny Crow is one of the park’s standout features, both because of the perch’s scenic views across five counties and because of its picturesque and historic rock shelter.

When I visited, I also enjoyed exploring the tranquil meadow that houses Lee House and the nearby Lee Sulfur Spring.

The night I spent in a classic pioneer cabin, I enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of a whippoorwill sitting right outside my door.
