Sharon Horgan says there is life after divorce as she reveals her children are a bit of a circus family as she juggles acting and parenting

Sharon Horgan has said there is life after divorce as she revealed her children are a “bit of a circus family” as she juggles acting and parenting.

The Irish actress, 52, tied the knot with businessman Jeremy Rainbird back in 2005 and the couple were married for 14 years until splitting in 2019.

Sharon told The Sunday Times that she lives with her two daughters Sadhbh and Amer, now 16 and 20, but family life can be challenging at times.

“It’s tough because it’s just me, but we make it work,” she said. “It’s a bit of a circus family: my work-life balance has to change, and that’s good.

“But when I do take a job, the girls are incredibly encouraging because they know I’d really rather be with them.”

Sharon’s separation echoed the story in her American series Divorce, which she wrote.

Divorce, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, debuted in 2016, and followed the character Frances Dufresne, a married woman who has an affair and begins divorce proceedings with her husband.

Sharon became pregnant just six months after meeting Jeremy and based her Channel 4 drama Catastrophe, starring Rob Delaney, on their experiences.

When the show first came out, she told the New Yorker, “If it wasn’t so hard to get a divorce, I would get a divorce.”

Sharon also spoke about her divorce from husband Jeremy last year and how it has “changed” her life.

Reflecting on their divorce while talking to Red MagazineSharon admitted that she felt “terrified” about separating from her husband at first, but that she is much happier now.

She told the magazine: “I thought it was scary at first, but it’s just about learning to do things in a slightly different way.

“Everything I relied on another person for, I could then – for the most part – learn myself.

‘I’m not saying I don’t have help around me – it’s a big old thing I run here – but learning to do things I was afraid of has enriched my life.

“I feel more in control and more independent. I really feel happier than I have been in years.’

Sharon also went on to talk about the “shame” surrounding divorce, saying that shouldn’t be the case as it can be a life-changing decision.

“A divorce can be a very helpful, practical thing that can change your life,” she said.

“There’s a lot of shame attached to the failure of a relationship, and that shouldn’t be the case.”

While the actress previously spoke about the plot for Catastrophe: “That’s what happened to me,” she has said, “so it made sense to write about it.”

After announcing their split, Jeremy said the couple would be parents to their two children, claiming they’ve all been hanging out together recently and “We’re so happy we’re genuinely friends.”

Since writing Pulling, which started in 2006, Sharon has gone on to write and star in Hollywood films and British dramas including Game on and also Motherland.

The Irish star also bought a Hollywood home. The one-story 1953 house, just below the Hollywood sign, once belonged to Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and in the late 1990s.
