Meet Indianapolis Star public safety reporter Jade Jackson

It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you news from across central Indiana. In this feature, the Indianapolis Star introduces readers to our editorial staff—or rather, we let them introduce themselves. Up this week is Jade Jackson.

What is your job title?

Public safety reporter

When did you join IndyStar?

May 2024

What is your favorite part of your job?

The excitement of the pursuit of a story. Breaking news is such a rush to get information, get it accurate and get it in time for our readers to keep them informed. And while there are aspects of the job that aren’t so positive, like covering murders and talking to families of crime victims, when I can profile someone who’s no longer here, it’s really nice to hear back from those families who say that they appreciate how I wrote about their loved ones.

Even when I am no longer here, each story will live on beyond me. It’s history.

Why journalism?

Why not journalism?

But seriously, this is the perfect career for my undiagnosed ADHD. Funny enough, growing up I always wondered why my dad would read the IndyStar magazine and my mom would watch Channel 6 for breakfast. Because who wants to read or watch the news when you could give your amazing 6 year old attention and we could watch cartoons before school?

Fast forward to now and my why for journalism continues to inform, educate, motivate and inspire change.

What is your favorite restaurant or hidden gem in the Indy area?

I grew up on the west side. Haughville, USA to be exact, so you know I love Long’s Bakery. There is no other yeast donut in the world that can top Longs. That bakery raised me, because I refuse to get birthday cake anywhere else.

What do you do to relax from a job that can be stressful?

I love spending time with family and friends. I am actively involved in many clubs and organizations. There is always something going on in this city, and I love going out to events and networking. I’m also super involved in my church, because I’m in the media ministry.

My hobbies consist of Dungeons & Dragons, working out, creating informative and entertaining social media content, and doing community service. But my real happy place is in my bed cuddling with my cats and watching my favorite shows.

What song do you shamelessly jam to in the car?

“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from the “Mulan” soundtrack.

What is the best advice you ever received?

Just don’t care. Master the art of distancing yourself from these invisible expectations.

Really think about it. Think of all the things going on in your life right now that are bothering you and imagine what would happen if you didn’t give them your energy.

If you could guest star on any TV show, past or present, which one?

“House of the Dragon”, but don’t put me in those horrible wigs like they do with other black characters. Because there’s no reason why Daemon Targaryen’s lace front is put down to the Seven Gods of Westeros, but Valyrian wigs give Tyler Perry.

Do you prefer dogs or cats?

I’m really a dog person, but I have two cats because they’re easier to manage with my busy schedule. So now I guess I’m a cat person now. I love dogs, but I’ll probably leave my future fortune to my cats when I die.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I’m full of so many surprises so I’m not sure. People make their assumptions based on how you look, what you wear, how you talk and all these things. So I guess I would say they would be surprised that I know facts about very niche things. Like I can tell you every detail of 9/11.

I taught myself to read Egyptian hieroglyphics when I was little. I am very unconventional. Very rattling and sophisticated, so it’s what you call a “sophisticated ratchet”. I love playing Assassin’s Creed. I am adopted. Not by white people, too many ask. People swear I’m funny, but I’m so serious.

How did you earn your first dollar?

My dad owned his own business on the west side and hired me when I was 7. Labor laws, am I right? I worked three whole weeks to get enough dollars to buy this cute $7.99 ginger border collie plush from Toys R Us, remember them? Now that I think about it, it was well below minimum wage and I should have filed a complaint.

Update: My mom told me that I wasn’t actually on the payroll and my only job was to sit quietly and finish my homework.
