I felt I couldn’t leave now – Pep

Pep Guardiola says the reason for signing a contract extension was that he simply could not leave Manchester City now.

The Catalan has signed a new two-year contract extension with Manchester City, which means he will have spent more than a decade as our manager.

Guardiola has led City to incredible success during his eight-and-a-half years at the club with 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League.

He says he feels his job at City was done.

“I felt I couldn’t leave now, simple as that,” he said in his City Studios interview after signing the new deal.

“Don’t ask me why. Maybe the four defeats were the reason why and I felt I can’t leave. I felt the club still wanted me or had the fact that we were together and that’s why we’re signing.”

Guardiola has been in charge of 490 games in total with only Les McDowall ahead of Pep on the club’s all-time list of most games managed.

After being at the club for so long, he feels there is still more to achieve.

“Firstly, it’s because we won a lot, otherwise you don’t stay 11 years, not even here in a place where I feel love,” Pep added.

“This is a business and you have to win and have a contract but I know if you don’t win I might not continue.

“It’s just the feeling that the moment will now feel like it’s done, the club knows that and that moment wasn’t felt.

“I enjoy it here. I like my job. I like being the manager of this club.

“I said many times since many many years ago, the moment I will not have that feeling, even under contract, I will call my chairman and CEO and say that the best thing for the club right now is that I have to leave.

“I don’t have that feeling right now and that’s why I extended a little bit longer.”

The success we have had under Pep has been remarkable with last season City becoming the first English men’s team to win four consecutive top-flight titles in the history of the game.

It came off the back of our historic treble triumph when we won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in the same season.

Guardiola says there are many reasons for City’s success.

“I think the hierarchy is so stable, the club is so, so stable in many departments and everyone knows the quality of players we have in this decade – nine, ten, eleven years,” he said.

“I don’t forget my first season here with the players, I had at that moment so it helped me a lot to understand the club, the team, the Premier League and many, many things and everyone was involved.

“I didn’t have the feeling that the reason is a specific reason – there are many reasons why we have a lot of success.”
