Battery storage scheme “too harmful” – the advice

The plans would have seen a total of 200mw of battery storage, equipped with containers, transformers and associated infrastructure, according to the Local Democracy Service.

Applicants Harmony TC Limited and Newton Energy argued that the development would be in line with national energy policy focused on achieving a net-zero future.

More than 100 letters of support were submitted for the schemes, which highlighted the delivery of renewable energy that would lower bills as well as create green jobs.

However, a total of 37 objections were submitted, which argued that the development was unsuitable for green belt land and that brownfield plots would be more suitable.

One objector warned that the countryside was at risk of becoming a “major industrial zone”, adding that “open season has been declared on the Wickerlsey green belt”.

Council planning officers acknowledged the facility would encroach on the green belt, which would defeat its purpose, but said the damage would be outweighed by public benefits.
