Residents demonstrate against poor living conditions in Brampton Highrise

Residents of a Brampton high-rise say they will rally today to protest living conditions in the building.

Tenants plan to rally outside 99 Kennedy Rd. N. to demand an end to “roach infestations, mold and chronically neglected repairs.”

The landlord of the property, Golden Equity, could not be reached for comment.

Supported by ACORN, an anti-poverty organization that represents lower- and middle-income residents across Canada, residents will also call on the City of Brampton to expand a landlord licensing program to include large apartment buildings.

“The City of Brampton is piloting a landlord licensing program but only for small buildings, leaving large corporate landlords like Golden Equity, who own high-rise buildings, completely unaccountable,” ACORN said.

According to ACORN, the issue in Brampton is closely linked to the purpose of National Housing Day and the urgent need for social and non-market housing in Canada. Similar demonstrations are being held across the country today.

A spokesperson for the residents says they intend to raise awareness of the living conditions in the Brampton building and hope the landlords will listen and act on their demands for repairs and safety.
