Orion Township apartment explosion update: Investigation could take weeks

Orion Township authorities said a total of 18 units were destroyed in the violent explosion that leveled an apartment and seriously injured two people on Tuesday night.

Authorities spoke at a news conference Wednesday afternoon to provide additional information about the apartment explosion — believed to have been caused by a gas leak.

Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard were among those who spoke during the 4 p.m. news conference.

“The full investigation, we expect to take, a little over a week, to get even initial information. So I don’t have much, when it comes to, what happened or where or the root cause, right now, we’re looking at to have 18 units that are completely destroyed,” Barnett said.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard encouraged people who want to help to go to the sheriff’s website or social media to find legitimate charities. He later warned people about fraudsters looking to profit from the incident by faking charities, stating that he saw it with many other tragedies, including Oxford High School mass shooting and that Splashpad shooting.

The explosion leveled the Keatington New Town Condominiums around 6:30 Tuesday night. According to reports, the sound was heard and felt for several kilometers. The emergency services were on site until 01:30 on Wednesday.

“I was at the computer and there was a shock wave. The screen came up at me and everything came off the walls,” neighbor Scully Hirsack said. “I ran out and saw that the corner unit was just gone.”

The apartment, on Waldon between Joslyn and Baldwin Roads, was destroyed in the explosion while other nearby homes were damaged. After the explosion, a woman in her 60s and a man in her 80s were missing. They were later found alive, but with serious injuries.

Both victims were initially listed with serious injuries. The man was upgraded and was able to speak with investigators earlier in the day on Wednesday. The woman was upgraded to stable condition. Several others also received minor injuries.

Thankfully, no one died in the explosion.

“I think we’re very fortunate to be able to go away and hold everybody accountable, and to say we have as few in critical condition as we do,” said Orion Township Fire Chief Ryan Allen. “This could have been a lot worse. At this point, I think we’re really lucky to have as little as we have.”

Consumers said they are still investigating whether the explosion was linked to a gas leak. During Wednesday’s update, a spokesman said the explosion was not due to natural gas problems in the building.

“Consumers Energy has a standard process for investigating gas explosions. As part of that process, we participate in testing of our facilities. We completed that testing and no problems were found. We will continue to participate in the investigation of the cause and origin of this event when private parties have been contacted and a scene investigation has been scheduled.”
