Aaron Rodgers to be cut by Jets with quarterback set to leave and decision made | NFL | Sports

The New York Jets will part ways with Aaron Rodgers, potentially ending his season early after a disastrous run. The quarterback himself has reportedly decided to leave and could even be cut this season.

Speculation over Rodgers’ future has been rife in recent weeks as the iconic player has had his worst statistical season in years and will turn 42 next season. Despite rumors of retirement, the four-time MVP is said to be eager to play next season, but with a different team.

The Athletic reports that the Jets plan to list Rodgers on the injury report in the coming weeks to end his season, or they could bench him with the intention of cutting him before 2025. Rodgers reportedly plans to play next season, but not with the Jets .

After firing both Robert Saleh in October and Joe Douglas on Tuesday, the Jets front office has made it clear they are unhappy with the direction of the franchise and appear to be planning a major overhaul after a disastrous season. With neither a head coach nor a general manager heading into the new season, the decision to possibly move on from Rodgers appears to come from owner Woody Johnson.

Reports suggest he has lost faith in the veteran’s ability to lead the team to where he believes it should be.

In a shocking revelation, the report suggests the Jets may even release Rodgers this offseason, with no plans to re-sign him. This could give the veteran quarterback an opportunity to join another team, possibly a Super Bowl contender.

Despite entering the season as favorites to win the AFC East over the Buffalo Bills, the Jets have failed to impress both offensively and defensively, despite their strong overall squad.

The team would need to win all of its remaining games to have any chance of making the postseason, despite significant efforts to improve the team around Rodgers, including bolstering its offensive line and trading for Davante Adams.
