90,000 expected to fly from Memphis airport over Thanksgiving weekend: How to prepare

The Transportation Security Administration said it expects 90,000 people to pass through the checkpoint at Memphis International Airport between 22 November and 2 December.

Here’s what you need to know to travel through Memphis International over Thanksgiving.

The busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving weekend

TSA predicts that Memphis will have its busiest travel day on Friday, Nov. 22 with more than 10,000 people expected to pass through the checkpoint.

How early does one arrive at the Memphis airport?

Memphis International Airport recommends that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before your departure time. The airport emphasizes this guideline for flights between 04:00 and 07:00

Tips for traveling from the TSA

It is recommended to check in online with the airlines before arriving at the airport to save time. Travelers are also advised to check in with the airline rather than the airport for flight schedules and information.

Some of parking spaces at MEM will likely reach capacity on peak days, and additional signage will be placed to help drivers find additional parking.

One rule for those who may not have traveled for a while is that any item that you may be carrying must fit into one of the bins in order to pass through the scanners when going through security. No objects may be placed directly on the belt. Everything must fit in the bins that are 19.5 inches by 24.5 inches.

Parking at Memphis International Airport

The Memphis Airport has five parking lots that total to almost 9,000 parking spaces. All lots allow a maximum parking time of 30 days.

Economy parking

  • Availability: 4,542 seats

  • It takes levels three through seven of Ground Transport Center.

  • Level five offers charging stations for electric vehicles.

Short-term parking

  • Cost: $4 per hour after the first 30 minutes or $24 per day.

  • Takes up the ground level of the three-storey parking deck opposite the terminals

Long-term parking

  • Cost: $4 per hour after the first 30 minutes or $15 per day.

  • Availability: 2,225 parking spaces

Overflow Parking

  • Cost: $9 per day when used for flooding and take credit cards only.

  • The Blue Lot and Yellow party are overcrowded parking lots.

  • Blue Lot is on the west side of the airport and Yellow is on the east side.

  • Blue opens first for spills with 901 seats followed by Yellow with 841 seats.
