Guwahati: A teacher and his daughter were killed in a road accident after being hit by a bus on NH-17 in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Friday morning, police said.
The collision occurred in Nityabazar area when the bus tried to overtake another vehicle and collided with the motorcycle on which the duo was traveling to school. The deceased man, Nasurullah Ahmed, was a social science teacher. His daughter, Sahnaj Ahmed (9), was a student of St Francis de Sales School in Bahalpur.
The incident sparked protests by villagers who blocked the highway for several hours and set fire to the bus. Subsequently, police forces were deployed to maintain order. Bongaigaon District Commissioner Nabadeep Pathak and SP Mohan Lal Meena also arrived at the collision site.
The DC said public demands for improved signage and speed breakers in Nityabazar area, a densely populated residential area, would be considered and action would be taken accordingly.
