The 'code' that has caused the betting companies in India to find themselves in a bind

Indian gaming companies and trade bodies which All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) and E-Gaming Federation (EGF) is reportedly working together to establish a uniform code of conduct. According to a report in the Economic Times, the initiative aims to address issues such as player protection, abuse prevention and responsible gaming. The proposed code will outline specific guidelines for all gaming companies, regardless of whether they operate games of skill or chance. It will complement the existing voluntary code of ethics signed by trade associations in December 2023.
This initiative differs from the voluntary code of ethics signed by industry bodies in December 2023. The new joint code aims to create a more comprehensive and binding framework for the entire industry.

Key areas of focus in the joint code of conduct include:

* Stricter Know-Your-Customer (KYC) norms: To verify player identities and prevent gambling by minors.
* Measures to reduce gambling and gambling addiction: To promote responsible gambling.
* Other aspects of responsible gaming: Such as fair play, transparency and data privacy.
The move comes as the gaming industry faces various challenges, including retrospective tax claims, high VAT rates and fluctuating policies. By presenting a united front, the industry hopes to navigate these obstacles and foster a sustainable gaming ecosystem.
India’s burgeoning gaming market is poised for significant growth, with millions of new players expected to join the scene in the coming years. The industry’s commitment to responsible gaming practices is critical to ensuring a healthy and sustainable future.
