Norton fire inspector rescued after CO2 leak

NORTON, Ohio (WJW) – A Norton fire inspector was trapped in a facility Tuesday morning after a valve failure during the decommissioning of an old CO2 fire suppression system.

Just before 9:30 a.m., the Norton Fire and Police Departments responded to a Mayday call reporting that the inspector had become trapped while working to disable the system.

The valve failure resulted in the release of approximately 1,000 pounds of CO2 into the space where the inspector was located, according to a press release from the Norton Fire Department.

A company employee and a member of a local fire protection company were able to get out on their own.

The company employee was able to get back into the building to rescue the inspector.
