Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has high expectations for new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim before his first match in charge of the club.

Amorim was appointed United boss same week as Erik ten Hag was fired by Ineos. However, an agreement with the Lisbon club meant he did not leave Sporting to start his new role at Old Trafford until November 11.

As such, the Portuguese has had two weeks of uninterrupted time to settle and familiarize himself with the United squad before leading them at Ipswich Town on Sunday. After a historically bad start to Premier League season the Reds will be hoping for an immediate change in fortunes and Carragher believe Amorim could be the man to do just that.

“It may take years for a manager to perfect his footballing ideals, but the best only require one match to show the world what they are,” Carragher wrote in his book. Telegraph column. “That’s why Ruben Amorim introduction as Manchester United manager is the most anticipated Premier League debut in years.

“I can’t wait to see United take on Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon as we are about to witness one of the most radical mid-season changes in formation and strategy ever imposed by one of the elite clubs. Facing the fourth from bottom may seem a gentle introduction to English football for Amorim but my suspicion is that it will be a lot trickier than many think.

“Amorim’s introduction of the 3-4-3 that was so successful at Sporting Lisbon means United’s players will adapt to a whole new approach. In the longer term, we can expect a significant improvement in results and performance.

“In the short term, it’s natural to expect childhood illnesses.” After the trip to Portman Road, Amorim will be welcomed to Old Trafford for the first time in Europa League as Bodo/Glimt visit.

His first Premier League game at the Theater of Dreams is at home to Everton a week on Sunday.
