Salt Lake City police officers on administrative leave after death of 50-year-old man

Two Salt Lake City police officers have been placed on administrative leave following the death of a 50-year-old man.

The investigation began shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 21 when officers were dispatched to the area of ​​800 South and 700 East on reports of a man who was naked, disoriented and rummaging through trash. While officers were en route, dispatch received an additional call indicating the man was shaking.

Social workers assigned to the department also responded to assist with the situation.

Upon arrival, officers found the man, who was conscious and breathing but not alert. He reportedly appeared thin, weak and malnourished. Police requested resources from the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance for a psychological evaluation and medical treatment.

While waiting for the ambulance staff, the police provided the man with clothes and blankets. Authorities reported that he was handcuffed when he repeatedly tried to stand despite being instructed to remain seated.

When Gold Cross paramedics arrived, they transported the man to the hospital, with SLCPD officers and social workers following in separate vehicles. According to the police, the man’s condition worsened during the transport.

“Despite life-saving efforts, the man died at the hospital,” police said. “The specific cause of death is not yet known and will be determined by the medical examiner.”

In accordance with officer-involved critical incident protocols, the two SLCPD officers who interacted with the man have been placed on administrative leave. The West Jordan Police Department’s OICI Protocol Team 4 is leading the investigation.
