I will stay at Manchester City even if we get relegated

Pep Guardiola has insisted he would stay at Manchester City even if they were relegated from the Premier League following the allegations against them for alleged wrongdoing.

Guardiola has signed a new contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2027 with no relegation clause, and the Catalan coach is staying regardless the outcome of the 115 charges against the club.

“I said that six months ago,” Guardiola said. “It’s not because I’m extending the contract that I’m pretending how nice this club is. I said six months ago or a year ago – what if we get relegated? I’ll be here. If we’re in the conference we will come up and come up.

“Negotiating the new deal with the board was a two-hour process. Decisions throughout my life have been made based on what I feel at that moment.”

Guardiola said he signed a two-year contract because he did not want speculation about his future transfer for next season. He added: “Mainly, I don’t want the next season in September, October, November, “It’s the last year of Pep, he has to extend again, and again, and again.” That was the main reason. I don’t want to be in that position.”

The league secured a win over City on Friday in the bitter sponsorship battle after only Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest joined Aston Villa in the rebellion. The clubs voted 16 to four to approve three changes to associated party transactions, proposed in response to City’s landmark arbitration over the summer. Such a case is separate from the wider legal battle over the so-called “trial of the century” against the club.

In the immediate term, Guardiola will be looking to end a run of four consecutive defeats when his side host Tottenham on Saturday.

“Most of the teams can lose four games in a row in different competitions but only one team won four Premier League titles in a row,” he added.
