John Lithgow-led ‘Giant’ to move to West End in 2025

The play follows acclaimed children’s author Roald Dahl over the course of a single afternoon, in the wake of scandal caused by an explicitly anti-Semitic article.

Mark Rosenblatt’s new play Giantstarring Tony winner John Lithgow, will move to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theater next year, following a run at the Royal Court in September. The play will be performed from April 26, 2025 to August 2, 2025.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner (Guys & DollsStraight Line Crazy, La Belle Sauvage) and designed by Bob Crowley, the play follows acclaimed children’s author Roald Dahl over the course of a single afternoon, in the wake of scandal caused by an explicitly anti-Semitic article. Lithgow (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Crown) reprises the role of Dahl from the Royal Court Race.

Olivier Award winner Elliot Levey (Cold War, Patriots, Good) returns as Tom Maschler.

Mark Rosenblatt said: “Premiere GIANTmy first play, at the legendary Royal Court Jerwood Theater Downstairs has been a wonderful, dizzying and life-changing experience. Had its journey ended there, it would have been good. But to have Nick Hytner’s superlative production now transferred to the West End to be experienced by a wider audience is far beyond my expectations.”

John Lithgow said: “For over sixty years, the Royal Court Theater has been the cradle of great new playwriting. Together with writer Mark Rosenblatt and director Nick Hytner, they have launched yet another remarkable new play. I am delighted and proud to be part of its first trip out into a bigger world.”

David Byrne, artistic director of The Royal Court, added: “Mark Rosenblatts GIANT is a stunning debut feature brought brilliantly to life in Nicholas Hynter’s thrilling production. I am incredibly proud to have had GIANT as part of my first season at the Royal Court, where both Mark and Nick made their Royal Court debuts. With the exception of our famous Monday night safety seats, GIANT sold all available tickets for the premiere at the Royal Court before the first preview. I am therefore delighted that it is moving to the West End, led by the incomparable John Lithgow, so that more audiences can have the pleasure of experiencing this poignant new play.”

The production has lighting design by Anna Watson and sound design by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite

Additional casting has not yet been announced.
