Matt Gaetz retires as Donald Trump’s Attorney General Pick

Matt Gaetz pulls out his nomination of Attorney General amid his ongoing sex-for-hire scandal and its aftermath The House Ethics Committee’s investigation.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, the former Florida representative, 42, announced the social media that he is withdrawing his nomination after “unfairly becoming a distraction” to the transition of power to President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.

“I had excellent meetings with senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback — and the incredible support from so many,” he wrote in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). “While momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction from the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition.”

Gaetz went on to write that he is withdrawing from the nomination because he will not be ready in time to take on the responsibility given the ongoing scandal. “There is no time to waste on an unnecessarily protracted Washington squabble, so I will withdraw my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” he added.

The politician further aligned himself with Trump, writing, “I remain fully committed to seeing that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I am sure he will save America.”

Gaetz was nominated for attorney general by Trump on Wednesday, November 13.

He was recently investigated by the Department of Justice in a sex-trafficking surveybut investigator refused to press charges. He remains under investigation by the Republican-controlled House Ethics Committee for similar allegations.
