Colorado’s Travis Hunter has moved to the top of the Heisman Trophy odds

It comes up on Thanksgiving and the fight for Heisman Trophy has turned into a one-horse race.

Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter has moved into the solid favorite role as the media (ESPN in particular) calls him out for the award. His preseason odds were 50:1 because the award usually goes to quarterbacks and sometimes a running back. Michigan defensive back/receiver Charles Woodson was the last two-way honoree to win the Heisman – way back in 1997.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward is still in the running but he will need to put up some monster numbers in the next two games to overtake Hunter.

Here are this week’s odds courtesy of noted oddsmaker Danny Sheridan:

Travis Hunter – 1:3 (3 to 1 favourite)

Everyone has jumped on the Hunter bandwagon. His most recent performance in last week’s win against Utah was unremarkable — except for hitting the Heisman bag after scoring on a 5-yard run.

On the season, he has 74 receptions for 911 yards (12.3 yards a catch) and nine touchdowns. On defense, he has 27 tackles and three interceptions. More importantly, he barely leaves the field – although rumors of him selling popcorn at halftime are apparently exaggerated.

Ashton Jeanty 3:1

The Boise State running back is hanging in there just like his team in the College Football Playoff rankings. Since 2000, only three running backs have won the Heisman: Reggie Bush, USC; Mark Ingram, Alabama; Derrick Henry, Alabama. For Jeanty to join that trio, he needs to keep doing what he’s been doing. In 10 games, he has averaged 7.39 yards per carry and leads the nation in carries (256), rushing yards (1,893) and rushing touchdowns (26).

Cam Ward 12:1

The Hurricanes were shutout last week so their quarterback was unable to fill his stats. No reason why we can’t post his current season stats: 32 touchdown passes, 3,494 yards and a 66.8 completion percentage. He also has just six interceptions and an 89.4 QBR — an ESPN metric that ranks him first among all college quarterbacks.

Dillon Gabriel 25:1

Sure, Oregon is ranked No. 1 in every poll — and has already made the Big Ten in its first season in that conference. The Ducks quarterback had been solid all season, if not spectacular. Some in the media have started harping on his Heisman chances – four interceptions in the red zone … not running as much or as well as before. But he still has solid numbers and three wins over top 25 teams.
