West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee directs DGP Rajiv Kumar to check corruption

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday pulled up the state’s top police force over allegations of corruption in the lower ranks of the police force.

In a meeting with top officials of the state, Banerjee instructed West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar that no official or political leader accused of corruption should be spared legal action.

“The local police don’t help. Everyone’s to blame netted (political leaders). They think ten times before taking a bribe. Some lower-level officials, including the police, accept bribes. Regardless of whether it concerns the smuggling of coal or cement. There are so many stones lying around. Why is the land department sitting idle? All illegal mining must be stopped,” Banerjee said at the meeting.

Mamata Banerjee also directed the top police to arrest central paramilitary personnel if they are caught taking bribes or involved in cases related to corruption linked to coal theft.

“If CISF personnel take the money, you can be arrested. I will not tolerate it. If a politician does that, arrest him legally. I don’t need money, I go and ask people. Don’t leave anyone,” Mamata said.

“Some people think that someone will save them, but I won’t. I will reshuffle the CID. Whoever has allegations against them must take action. Don’t spare anyone,” she added.

The sharp comment by Mamata Banerjee came after leaders from both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP criticized the police over the recent incidents in the state.

Banerjee also directed the police to maintain a high level of vigilance at both national and international borders to stop the smuggling of fake currency and arms in the state.

“I tell the police to be alert. Fake currency is coming through international borders, and it is under central, and they are not doing much. Our internal borders must be on alert, naka control must be active. Weapons coming through the railway must also be checked , says Banerjee.

She also questioned the BSF and CISF to check the identity of the people who enter with fake passports.

“Border security is under central (government), they have to work well, we will give cooperation. How will I check if one enters with a fake passport or not? CISF checks airports, not me,” Mamata said.
