Good Samaritan killed on US-31, hit by pickup truck while trying to help stranded car

MASON COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) – A Pentwater woman, 35, is dead after she and another Good Samaritan were struck by a pickup truck while checking on a driver who was spinning out along US-31.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office said the two victims pulled over onto the southbound shoulder to check on another driver who earlier lost control and ended up in the middle of the highway.

A third vehicle, driven by a 37-year-old Shelby man, approached the scene and was also traveling southbound on US-31.

The truck driver also lost control and went into the median, hitting the two Good Samaritans and the car they were controlling.

The road is said to have been wet with scattered slips.

The two people in the car, the other pedestrian and the driver were all injured and taken to Corewell Hospital for varying degrees of injuries.

Michigan State Police, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, PM Fire and Ludington Jaws all assisted at the scene.

The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
