New water leak repair ordinance goes into effect in Alabaster

ALABASTER, Ala. (WBRC) – A new water leak repair ordinance in Alabaster was recently approved by the City Council after several residents were concerned about high water bills.

WBRC learned that this new ordinance was drafted to protect tenants and encourage property owners to make proper repairs to leaks on their property.

Laura Koon, director of the water board, said the goals are to avoid property damage, conserve water and protect the water system.

Koon says the board has new meter technology that will provide readings that will alert the board immediately if someone has a continuous leak.

They will notify the customer and encourage them to make repairs, giving them seven days to do so.

If the repair is longer or more difficult to find, additional time will be given as long as they are making good progress.

If they are not, the property owner may face fines and other consequences.

“If the repair isn’t done, we can notify the property owner that we’re going to cut off the service. That would give them 72 hours notice and then we could cut off the service. We could actually do the repair and bill them for it, several different ways of dealing with it, says Koon.

Koon says this new ordinance will ensure that property owners do their fair share and protect tenants or residents of these structures.

The regulation entered into force on 7 November.
