Netizens and Businesses Leave Elon Musk Owned X to Create Accounts on Bluesky Post Trump’s Win

After the victory of former US President Donald Trump in the last election, a number of users are fleeing X and switching to another social media platform called Bluesky. After Trump’s victory, the upcoming change to the terms of service for X threatens to complicate the legal challenges that Elon Musk and his team will have to face. According to a Reuters report, Bluesky reported on Thursday that it has added about 2.5 million new users in the past week, bringing its total user base to over 16 million.

The platform is one of several apps that are positioning themselves as alternatives to the service formerly known as Twitter, following Elon Musk’s acquisition.

Bluesky said: “We’re seeing record levels of activity across all different forms of engagement: likes, follows, new accounts, etc, and we’re on track to add 1 million new users in just one day.”

Mission Vacation X?

Several prominent organizations and individuals, including the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate, British news outlet The Guardian and former CNN anchor Don Lemon, have announced they are leaving X, citing concerns about the platform’s content and upcoming changes to its terms. During the last election, disinformation experts criticized X for facilitating the spread of false narratives about key battleground states.

On Nov. 6, the day news broke of Trump’s Musk-backed presidential victory, X saw a record 46.5 million visits in the U.S., marking a 38% increase over an average day in recent months, according to data from SimilarWeb. However, the increase in traffic coincided with over 115,000 US users deactivating their accounts – the highest number since Musk acquired the platform.

In contrast, Bluesky’s website attracted about 1.2 million visitors on November 6, surpassing Meta-owned threads, which received about 950,000 visitors. However, Thread’s mobile app traffic continued to outpace Bluesky’s.
