The dark tone was set by his guest speaker and Trump stalwart, namely podcaster and comedian Tony Hinchliffe who branded Puerto Rico, home to 3.2 million US citizens, an “island of garbage floating in the ocean”.

He also said “these Latinos, they love to make babies” and made crude comments about their attitude toward family planning methods before Trump took the stage.

His comments were dismissed by the singer Ricky Martinone Harris supporter, who ranted on Instagram: “That’s what they think of us.”
