A 22-year-old man who concealed an illegally modified weapon was among about a dozen arrests made by Pennsylvania State Police during Shippensburg’s homecoming event last weekend, according to a news release.

Troopers patrolling the neighborhood heard multiple gunshots near South Penn Street and Dykeman Road around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 19. When state police arrived in the area, two men in hoodies ran away, the release said.

One of the suspects, later identified as 22-year-old Evan Sipes, of Shippensburg, was arrested after a chase, police said. Troopers searched Sipes and found a handgun with the serial number “obliterated” and several magazines, according to the police report.

Sipes also resisted troopers during his arrest and tried to flee after being taken into custody, police said. The other man who ran from the area could not be apprehended or identified.

Sipes — who is charged with possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, carrying a firearm without a license, resisting arrest and evading arrest — waived his preliminary hearing and will be arraigned on Dec. 30, court documents said.

State police made 12 other arrests during homecoming weekend, including an illegally possessed handgun seized during a traffic stop, three drug arrests, three arrests for consumption of alcohol by a minor, three false ID arrests, one harassment crime and one case of public drunkenness.

None of the homecoming weekend incidents occurred at Shippensburg University or involved Shippensburg students, a Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson said.

Additional police officers were stationed throughout Shippensburg during homecoming weekend due to the increased pedestrian traffic.
