First Lady Jill Biden stopped in Asheville on Friday to survey local relief efforts following the record-breaking flooding and destruction of Tropical Storm Helene in western North Carolina.

Her visit comes on the heels of former president Donald Trump’s appearance in Swannanoa days before, except for the Asheville stop in recent days from US Transportation Secretary Pete ButtigiegGovernor Roy Cooper and a flight across the region by President Joe Biden.

Biden’s jet landed at about 11:30 a.m. Friday at Asheville Regional Airport. She made no remarks at the airport.

Jill Biden’s visit to Asheville ends

The first lady planned visits to a few sites Friday afternoon, all related to storm relief and recovery efforts.

According to the First Lady’s office, Biden and Gov. Roy Cooper will visit:

  • World Central Kitchen’s meal preparation and distribution operations in Asheville. A briefing is planned on the organization’s work in preparing, loading and distributing meals to the city’s residents. Biden and Cooper planned to help wrap and serve meals alongside World Central Kitchen volunteers.
  • Team Rubicon’s operations at the Veterans Restoration Quarters in Asheville. The first lady plans to thank volunteers and staff who support housing for veterans in need.

After meeting with community members, the First Lady will travel east to Fayetteville and Cary, where she will participate in campaign events, the White House said.

North Carolina is one of seven battleground states, and polls show a close presidential election. As of Jill Biden’s Friday visit, there are 11 days left until election day.
