Kevin Quiambao almost went to UP instead of La Salle

KEVIN Quiambao knew no wrong as he shattered his career-best 29-point benchmark in just 10 days.

It’s as if the reigning and defending season and finals MVP has already made a habit of producing record-breaking performances out of thin air as he and La Salle strengthen their bid to retain the UAAP Season 87 title.

As he reflects on his best 33 plays ever, KQ couldn’t help but look back at how much of a privilege it has been for him to don the green and white and break the norms of how far a college player’s potential can go.

Meanwhile, Quiambao shockingly revealed that Taft Ave. wasn’t even meant to be his home to begin with.

Nowhere to go but UP?

Quiambao’s decorated junior career at NU-Nazareth School ended with a seismic transfer to the Green Archers, as the rest of their title-winning core jumped ship University of the Philippines.

Little did people know that at the time, barring some unexpected setbacks, KQ would have already been a Fighting Maroon just like his then running mate Carl Tamayo.

But into the equation when it came to the choice between UP and La Salle? His family.

“Way back in 2020, nagging to reach out the same as yung buong management ng La Salle. At that time, dati kong school said, had a minor problem.

“Aaminin ko, sasama na talaga ako ng UP at that time. Sasama dapat ako kina Carl, kina Gerry (Abadiano)China Terrence (Fortea),” Quiambao revealed SPIN.ph.

“Pero sinabi ko sa sarili ko, sa family ko, kasi dalawa pinagapipilian ko, kung mag-La Salle ako, tama ba itong gagawin ko na mag-iiba ako ng path sa mga dati kong teammate kasi noon na kahit medyo shaky, nandiyan sila palagi para sa’kin.

“Then ayun, the rest is history.”

Green-white was right

Going against the grain of almost everyone else on his Bullpups team, including the head coach at the time Goldwin Monteverdeproved to be the best decision for his now unparalleled collegiate career.

Indeed, not a day goes by when Quiambao will never be grateful for the golden opportunities that came his way while wearing the green and white on his sleeve.

As he put it, “Knowing the La Salle jersey, the young network and the alumni are very good. Sobrang daming makilikala. Sobrang daming friends na gusto ko rin makilikala.”

And when the time comes for it to be KQ’s last dance for Animo, you better believe he’ll never forget being a part of his dream school.

“Darating yung punto na magiging last game co na para sa La Salle, na hindi mo nang bababalikan yung mga times na ganito.

“So, it’s a privilege to just enjoy the La Salle jersey to enjoy every moment.”
