Grey’s Anatomy Addresses Voter Responsibility Days Before Election

“Grey’s Anatomy” He included a story about voter responsibility in his final episode, emphasizing the importance of participating in democracy with less than two weeks until the 2024 presidential election.

In episode 5 of the ABC medical drama titled “You Make My Heart Explode,” the senior interns were seen discussing the matter while dealing with a complex case involving a hospital employee. Although the show is no stranger to touching on important topics in its storylines, “Grey’s” took its voting message out to its viewers without going full PSA and going into details about this year’s race.

The episode began with Mika (Midori Francis) complaining about the long working hours of the interns filling in for her while she cared for her sick sister. When they arrived at the hospital entrance, they passed the voter registration drive and most said they were already registered to vote, but Blue (Harry Shum Jr.) passed up the opportunity to register, claiming that voting was “not my job.” and stunned his colleagues.

Later that same hour, Simone (Alexis Floyd) brought it up again as she and Blue waited for scans after the hospital orderly they were treating collapsed during her shift. He asked if he also ignored local and state elections and even public interest polls. He simply said that he usually throws them into his spam folder.

The janitor was diagnosed with an infection that caused him terrible pain, which doctors described as a symptom of sickle cell anemia. He complained that insurance paid to cover his hip replacement but not for the experimental procedure that could cure him. Blue gave an impassioned speech about how the system “sucks”.

“I know the frustration of trying to fight a system that doesn’t care if you suffer, live or die. They just see you as a code, a cost, or a number in a sea of numbers,” Blue tells the patient, before encouraging him to take care of himself and get the surgery his insurance will cover.

Determined to help the patient, Blue and Simone helped persuade some hospital partners to fund the experimental procedure. But even then, the cleaner had to decline the opportunity because the treatment would take eight months to a year and she could not leave her special needs son unattended for that long.

Feeling defeated, Blue said he simply told Simone that “the system still sucks.”

“Yeah, I wish there was something we could do about that,” Simone replied, making a subtle dig at Blue’s inaction.

Civic message aside, “Grey’s” packed plenty of drama into Episode 5. After Jo (Camilla Luddington) found out she was pregnant with twins, she lashed out at Link (Chris Carmack) for not supporting the proper way to process the news. Levi (Jake Borelli) and Lucas (Niko Terho) boarded a helicopter to pick up an injured 10-year-old boy for treatment and nearly crashed while returning to Gray Sloan Memorial; but they returned in time and rescued him. Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) collaborate on a difficult case while navigating a difficult time in their marriage; and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Monica (Natalie Morales) figure out how to get over their romantic chemistry now that Monica is seeing Winston (Anthony Hill).

The ending of the episode also offered a potential path for Levi to leave the hospital soon. Once Monica was convinced that Levi belonged in pediatric surgery, she suggested he do research while waiting for another opportunity to receive a fellowship as the next step in his training.

He has arranged an interview with the leader of a clinical trial in Texas, which would have been a surefire opportunity for him had it not been for Levi’s new relationship with the hospital chaplain, James (Michael Thomas Grant).
