Spike Jonze leaves his Netflix project as the series falls apart after two years of development

Well, this is unfortunate: Deadline reports it Spike Jonzes project over Netflixhis first attempt at scripted television, has been scrapped by the streamer. It’s unclear what prompted Netflix to scrap the limited series after a couple of years in development, but sources indicate it’s because Jonze decided to quit, though there’s a small chance he could return.

Still, the news comes as a bit of a shock since Netflix has a strong reputation for catering to auteurs with unique visions like Jonze. To have a project in the works for two plus years fall apart is a shock, especially one that had a writers room, Sister as producer and was looking at a casting director and a potential shooting date of 2025. But again, no one besides Jonze was ever part of the project to begin with; at least not officially. Rumors of Joaquin Phoenix or Brad Pitt starring in the limited series made the rounds, as did “Baby girl” director Halina Reijn be involved, but nothing was ever certain. And now it looks like the project won’t happen at all, or ultimately not in the short term.

Jonze hasn’t done anything since his 2020 documentary “The Beastie Boys story“for Appleso him teaming up with Netflix was a big deal. And the acclaimed filmmaker has never worked in long-form narrative TV either. One can only imagine what the creative voice behind “Being John Malkovich” and “Adaptation” would have boiled down to a project the length of a limited series. Other Jonze films include 2009’s “Where The Wild Things Are” and 2013’s “Her“, giving the director a career-5 Oscar nods, including a win for Best Original Screenplay. Jonze also has some television experience: he co-created and was an executive producer on MTVs”Donkey” and was once creative director at Vice Media.

But now it is unclear what Jonze will turn to next. It sounds like there’s an outside shot that he’ll return to his Netflix series, but the safe bet is that he’ll move on to something else in time.
