Pixel Buds Pro 2 review

Price: £219, Google Store

Also £219 at O2, EE, Amazon, Very and John Lewis

Telegraph judgment: 8 out of 10

We like:

  • Big upgrade over previous Pixel Buds Pro
  • Gemini AI in the ear
  • Smart “twist to fit” design

We don’t like:

  • Speech recognition is uneven
  • AI is a bit “Marmite”
  • Some features only work with a Pixel phone

What are Pixel Buds Pro 2?

Google’s signature headphones are back, with a huge upgrade over the bulky and unglamorous ones Pixel Buds Pro. They are now much smaller and easier to fit in the ear, thanks to a clever “twist to fit” design. There’s even an app that plays sounds in your ears to help you find the optimal fit.

For the first time, Google has added its own silicon to these headphones, in the form of a Tensor chip that promises world-beating noise reduction and clearer music.

For owners of Pixel phonesor Gemini AI subscribers, there are nifty (if slightly annoying) features like being able to have a full live conversation with Google’s Gemini AI, with the AI speaking in a human way and being able to resume smoothly after being interrupted.

How we test wireless headphones

We test headphones against five key figures. To rate the sound quality, we listen to a range of music from classical to drum & bass and heavy rock. We also call to check the clarity of the drivers and microphones.

To rate comfort and usability, we use the earbuds all day while working and exercising to make sure they fit, feel good, and are intuitive to use.

To rate noise reduction, we measure their ability to dampen unwanted noise in the office, on the street and on the London Underground. We are looking for a clear signal with a lot of detail, without having to increase the volume in noisy environments.

To measure battery life, we run the earbuds flat with continuous regular use, time how long it takes to charge them up, and then repeat the process again.

Finally, we look for any special programs that the earbuds can perform in conjunction with one smartphone or other peripherals. Here’s how I rated the Pixel Buds Pro 2 on all of these metrics:

Sound quality: 9 out of 10
