Law professor spots a Trump trait that could be ‘very destructive’

New York University Law Professor Ryan Goodman on Friday the alarm went off Donald Trumppp reported plan to dismiss those who worked with special counsel Jack Smith to file federal charges against him.

Goodman, in an interview with CNNErin Burnett, called the reported plan “extraordinary on so many levels” before adding that the layoffs would affect “officials who have legal protections,” including those who likely had no choice but to work with Smith’s team.

“And they may be some of the best in the country so to categorically dismiss the people who have protection, which also means it would probably be illegal firing,” he added.

He continued, “And a lot of the Justice Department and Pam Bondi are going to be caught up in a huge amount of employment litigation over all of their claims if they were to go down that road. So it’s just very destructive. It smacks of political retribution.”

Goodman said the idea that Trump would announce such firings — or reports about the plan before there is any kind of investigation” of members of Smith’s team — would give those fired “very strong legal claims.”

His comments will follow a source told The Washington Post that Trump intends to “clean out ‘the bad guys, the people who went after me'” from the Justice Department.

The plan would be in line with Trump repeatedly threatening it prosecute or punish their perceived enemies since 2022.

Smith, who sees to unwind the federal charges against Trump, reportedly expected to resign from his post before the president-elect takes office and possibly fire him.

A source told The Post that Trump also plans to use the DOJ to investigate the 2020 election, a race in which he has falsely claimed being “rigged” and “stolen”.

Trump, after former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination to be the President-elect’s attorney general, has since chosen longtime ally and former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead the DOJ.
