Autauga County Schools superintendent reacts to state report card

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (WSFA) – Autauga County Schools saw some big improvements in his report card score.

The school system’s overall rating improved by one point from last year, from 83 to 84.

“Our elementary schools knocked it out of the park,” said Autauga County Schools Superintendent Lyman Woodfin. “Our middle schools and high schools didn’t come quite as high as the elementary, so now the question is why.”

The school system saw a two-point increase in academic achievement, a three-point increase in graduation rates and a 10-point increase in combating chronic absenteeism.

“You can’t learn if you don’t go to school, right? And that’s where it starts. Our parents have really worked with us because we’ve adopted some different policies and procedures,” Woodfin said.

Woodfin attributes the increase in graduation rates to an increase in extracurricular activities.

“We’ve gradually improved our offerings for our arts, our athletics, and you’re seeing more clubs, you’re seeing more things happening at the high school level to keep kids engaged,” he said.

As with any report card, there is always room for improvement. The district saw its English language proficiency score drop eight points from last year, and college and career readiness scores drop two points.

“We look at everything we do, from our expectations to how we do it, and try to improve everything we can at the high school level,” says Woodfin.

Autauga County Schools also earned five As, which is the most in school district history.

Autauga County Schools says the improvements on this report card are a direct result of the hard work and dedication of Autauga County Schools employees. They admit there is still work to be done, but they feel they are moving in the right direction.
