Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emerged as the star of the show as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti moved towards registering a resounding victory in the 2024 parliamentary elections. While there is no confirmation on who will be the chief minister from the Mahayuti alliance that also has Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) and NCP (Ajit Pawar), Fadnavi’s name is at the top of the speculations.

When the Mahayuti alliance could be seen winning over 200 seats in Maharashtra, with the BJP leading in over 120, Fadnavis spoke to his mother and also posted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election slogan. “Ek hain to safe hain, Modi hai to mumkin hai (We are sure if we remain one, it is possible if there is Modi),” Fadnavis wrote on X.

Fadnavis also spoke to his mother Sarita Fadnavis over phone when the results came. His mother congratulated him on the party’s huge victory and also asked him when he would visit Nagpur.

Will Devendra Fadnavis become Maharashtra CM?

Fadnavi’s mother told the media that she was happy and also expressed confidence that he would become the Chief Minister. “He worked very hard, he was always up and working,” she said.

Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Fadnavis, along with CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Fadnavis also met Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

When asked who the CM of Maharashtra will be, BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde said the decision will be taken by the party along with alliance partners. But speaking to CNN-News18, Maharashtra Legislative Council member Prasad Lal said, “Everyone will be together. It will be Mahayuti’s government for sure. Let’s wait till tomorrow, but I think Devendra Fadnavis will be the CM.”

Fadnavis was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 2014 to 2019. After Shiv Sena formed and alliance with Congress and NCP in 2019, Fadnavis resigned as CM. He became the Deputy CM in 2022 when the BJP formed the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra after forming an alliance with the Shiv Sena (Shinde) and the NCP (Ajit Pawar). His name has been at the center of the BJP’s stupendous performance in the Maharashtra assembly polls. All eyes are now on whether Fadnavis will return as CM.
