Hitchin scaffolder ‘devastated’ by death of man he hit

A scaffolder was “devastated” when he learned a man he punched outside a sports club after watching a Euro 2024 football match had died, jurors have heard.

Oscar Jackson, 21, from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, punched Grant Wallendorf, 45, in the face after both had watched the England v Serbia match at a sports club in Ickleford on June 16.

Wallendorf, who also lived in Hitchin, suffered brain damage and died in hospital.

Jackson, who denies murder and manslaughter charges, said he struck in “self-defense” and did not intend to injure or kill.
