NY pols eyes end obscene Hollywood subsidies – but NOT to cut taxpayers a break

Senate Democrats are finally questions New York’s tax subsidies for Hollywood — but only to burn the money elsewhere.

Dusted by a year-old report confirming that the $700 million tax credit does not generate enough economic benefits to justify the cost, Sen. Liz Krueger told reporters: “We need to get smarter in New York state about what programs we run, if they are worth their salt, if they are a bad use of public money.”

Still, neither she nor Sen. Jim Skoufis were worried in April, when the Legislature renewed the giveaway in this year’s state budget.

No, they’re just looking for available money in case the soon-to-be Republicans in Washington cut federal aid to the Empire State.

The huge incentive to attract Hollywood productions to New York amounts to $7.7 billion over 11 years; New York pols have long supported it because it encourages La-La-Land lovers to hobnob along them.

Empire Center’s EJ McMahon, a longtime critic of the giveaway, notes the tax credit works “more like a direct grant than a tax break” – and a contribution to an industry that will still film a lot here without the bribe.

About Krueger, Skoufis & Co. kills or at least reduces the pork, it will be a small step forward.

But don’t bet on them not turning the “savings” into any at all more awesome giveaway.
