A small group of pet owners and pet lovers gathered on the front lawn of Christ Episcopal Church on Pee Dee Boulevard in Albemarle on Oct. 19 for the church’s annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony.

Explaining that the event was organized in memory of St. Francis of Assisi, known as the “patron saint of animals” and commemorated every October, Pastor Chipper Long said, “This is the second year we have held the service.” .”

Scriptures from Genesis 1:1, 20-28 and 31 describing God’s creation of animals were read, followed by prayers of thanksgiving and blessings for each animal.

“We want to make this a community-wide event in the future,” Long said, mentioning the possibility of other churches and denominations participating.
