We will duck on and off during Thanksgiving trips

BILLING — In the short term, we don’t expect much rain or snow, but the precipitation we do get could create some hazards. In the long run, let’s talk about Thanksgiving.

Brisk winds down the E mountain slopes will keep temperatures into the 30s near the foothills, but otherwise we’ll be mainly in the 20s early Friday morning. Afternoon highs will range from the 30s of Billings to the north and east to the 40s to low 50s to the west and south.

The risk is low, but the impact could be big, so we will mention a chance of light freezing rain anywhere from Harlowton, Ryegate, to Roundup early on Friday and again on Saturday morning. Otherwise, apart from a few mountain showers, it will be dry through Friday.

Winds will be gusty around the Livingston foothills on Saturday as a cold front moves through. Wind gusts can reach 50 mph.

As the front moves through, rain and snow showers will develop and move across the plains. Accumulations are expected to be light. Billings only has about a 15% chance of an inch of snow Saturday through Sunday.

Behind the system, skies will clear and temperatures will drop. Sunday afternoon highs will mainly be in the 30s, with readings overnight into early Monday morning reaching the teens and single digits.

A somewhat unsettled weather pattern will follow. Temperatures will be at or cooler than average each day, with a chance of a few scattered showers lingering through Wednesday.

Overall, travel looks good before Thanksgiving, but showers may pop up here or there as we head into Black Friday and the weekend.
