The Netflix series watched for 331,000,000 hours is a complete mystery to me.

After almost all my favorites Television shows canceled one after another netflix‘s revival of the bland, run-of-the-mill drama Virgin River was a slap in the face.

The series has risen from the ashes of what came before and has become the Netflix English-language drama series with the most seasons. It was renewed early for a seventh season, in addition to the five existing seasons.

That’s right, he was defeated Crown, House of Cards And Stranger Things To secure its place in Netflix history – possibly with the aim of running for much more.

Orange Is the New BlackThe first two seasons count as one season comedy but even taking the full show into account, Virgin River is on track to surpass it soon.

For now, it’s only surpassed by the Spanish drama series Elite at eight (eight) in season count, but Virgin River still beats it in episode count.

For those unfamiliar (allegedly not many, given its popularity), the newly crowned Virgin River is based on Robyn Carr’s book series.

The series follows Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse practitioner who sacrifices her Los Angeles life for a fresh start in a remote Northern California town, where she soon meets the rugged and attractive Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).

As Mel gains a solid foothold in the local community, we soon become caught up in the dramatic events of the neighborhood, from shock pregnancies to gun crime, drug dealing, and everything in between.

As Mel and Jack struggle to overcome a romance laden with past traumas and fears for the future, their love for each other is at their beating hearts. Essentially, all the ingredients of your stereotypical US drama focusing on a straight white couple and their troubles.

I tried to try the show myself a few years ago and didn’t attract much attention. The plots, characters, and tropes all felt superficial and worn-out, so after a few episodes I clicked.

Although I could see myself returning to the series when I’m looking for some tacky, mid-range TV to watch in the dead of winter.

Whatever they put into this adaptation is clearly working, as the series continues to generate astounding viewing numbers.

There’s no denying its wholesome appeal, but is that enough? (Image: Netflix/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)

A Netflix report tracking viewing figures from July to December 2023 confirmed that the show’s fifth season reached an incredible 331 million viewing hours, with a total of 35.8 million viewers. And they’ll be expecting similar – if not better – results for their sixth season in December.

I have no doubt that series like this have a valuable space in the streaming ecosystem, and that the dramatic but ultimately feel-good nature of the show is likely an important form of escape for millions of people.

Still, if these are the only shows that have any chance of longevity, I can’t help but despair about the future of TV.

Why is Virgin River my not-so-guilty pleasure?

Deputy Entertainment Editor, Alicia Adejobi explains the appeal of the show.

It was the early days of the pandemic, and like the rest of the world, I was bored at home one evening, endlessly scrolling through Netflix trying to find something to take my mind off the dangers of the outside world.

Then, even though we knew the world had changed forever, I stumbled upon something I had recently added to My List: Among the hundreds of movies and shows I’ve added over time, there sat a brand new show called Virgin River. But I was never ready to start.

He had a recognizable face; Alexandra Breckenridge, whom I know from American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, and a face I don’t recognize; Martin Henderson, whom I’ve grown to love.

Look, it only took one episode for me to get hooked on the will, won’t they mix up the romance between Mel and Jack, and I’ve been hooked ever since. There’s no romantic story I love more than the friends-to-lovers trope, and Virgin River delivers in spades. It’s escapist viewing at its best, with feel-good stories and spectacular views, which is exactly what we all needed when I first got into entertainment.

Over the past few seasons, the show has become synonymous with Christmas for me, which is partly helped by the plot finally turning into a cozy holiday treat.

Yes, Virgin River has been on screens for five years, but the gap between five seasons is actually less than a year; That means Charmaine’s elephant pregnancy (she has to be the longest pregnant woman on TV), Jack getting shot and recovering, Preacher helping out. Paige running away and eventually coming back and all the other ridiculous events are even crazier.

Virgin River is certainly melodramatic and sometimes unrealistic, but that’s part of its charm. It gives you encouragement without having to get depressed, and it leans into your bullshit without pretending it’s more than it is: lots of healthy goodness

Over the past few years, groundbreaking series have emerged featuring vibrant, diverse casts that are so rarely represented on screen (especially for LGBTQ+ people of color). brutally canceled before it even has a chance to develop.

First Kill, Chaos, Dead Boy Detectives, Shadow and Bone, Glamorous, Uncoupled, 1899, Warrior Nun, Partner Track, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Everything Now – need I go on?

Not only have many of them provided vital representation on the streaming platform for marginalized groups, but the vast majority also have dedicated fan bases who tirelessly try to save their favorite shows from an untimely death.

These shows have not only provided brilliant premises (hapless vampires, quirky coming-of-age dramas, and haunting fantasies), but they’ve also reshaped the boundaries of what we can expect from a series when it comes to truly representing the world we live in.

Even if they didn’t get millions of views in their first week of release, they pushed the needle forward.

In my opinion, it is clear that Virgin River, which is also considering some potential spin-offs, will not close this gap.

While there was a base level of diversity when it came to race, class, and sexual orientation, the first few seasons were bland enough that there was increasing pressure to do anything to make the show a little more representative.

In 2022, Netflix head of drama Jinny Howe reiterated that this is a focus on the series.

‘It’s fair to say that this will continue to be a focus and is something viewers will experience more of in Season 5. That’s definitely a priority, and I think you’ll see that as we expand the Virgin River community. “There will be more diversity and inclusion,” he told Deadline.

Some episodes feature LGBTQ+ storylines, but these characters are still so painfully rare on screen that we had a hard time even finding photos of them in the series for this article. So you’ll have to imagine gay couple Johnny and Adrian.

Although season five introduced recurring LGBTQ+ character Ava Anderson to hold down the fort alongside the quiet Hannah (played by Clare Filipow), I guess it’s all about the little wins.

Like I said, I’m sure Virgin River is a gritty yet heartfelt drama perfect for a fall night, but why should it be one of the only shows that gets the treatment so many others deserve?

If a trite country drama that occasionally condescends to slip into a ‘progressive’ plot is the bar for what’s new, then any creativity in the TV world is officially at its last breath.
