Authorities say suspect was shot with a machete by deputies in Newbury Park

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. (KABC) — A suspect armed with a machete was injured during a deputy-involved shooting in Newbury Park following an argument at a nearby business, authorities said.

The incident happened just before 6.30am on Thursday near Ventu Park Shopping Centre.

Thousand Oaks officers responded to the scene after multiple calls to 911 about a vehicle fire and a possible domestic dispute involving a man with a large knife, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said the unidentified man got into some sort of argument at the Palm Garden Hotel.

When officers arrived, he headed toward the Ventu Park Shopping Center near Hillcrest Drive.

The suspect entered a bakery.

“During attempts to contact him and take him into custody, a Taser deployment occurred, but this was ineffective,” said Capt. Rob Yoos of the sheriff’s office. “The individual then crashed into a local business occupied by customers and employees, advanced on him and threatened employees with a machete, which was followed by a deputy-involved shooting.”

The suspect, who was in serious condition, was taken to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported. The investigation of the incident continues.
