M4 iMac: Five features we’ll see in just a couple of days

Apple will launch the M4 Mac series next week in a series of press releases, which Apple marketing director Greg Joswiak refers to as a “Exciting week of announcements.” Here’s everything you can expect with Apple’s next iMac update.

New M4 chip

Apple last updated iMac last October, upgrade it from the M1 chip to the M3 chip. Fortunately iMac won’t be skipping chips again, and we expect to see the M4 chip in iMac later this year, based on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process.

This will upgrade iMac from an 8-core CPU to a 10-core CPU, which equates to a performance increase of about 20-25%.

USB-C magic accessories

Recently, code was discovered in macOS 15.1 RC seems to suggest that there will be an update to the Magic accessories, as there are new references to additional Magic keyboard, Magic trackpadand Magic Mouse models.

Apple must transition all of its new devices from Lightning to USB-C by the end of this year to meet the requirements European regulation. Therefore, we should expect to see USB-C on the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad along with the next one iMac.

Additional unified memory

Previous reports from Bloomberg indicated that all M4 Macs would start with at least 16 GB of RAMaccording to information in developer logs. This would also apply to iMac with the M4, so we’ll likely see 16GB of RAM across the board with all base model iMacs, with the option to upgrade to 32GB of RAM.

Previously have M3 iMac topped out at 24GB of RAM.

More Thunderbolt ports

The port situation on 24″ iMac have always been a bit odd. There is a cheaper base model with only 2 Thunderbolt ports, and then a higher model with 2 Thunderbolt ports and 2 more standard USB-C ports.

While there’s no indication that Apple will increase the number of ports on the base model, there’s a decent chance that all four ports on the higher end iMac models will be Thunderbolt, rather than half and half.

According to analysis of an M4 punch shot made by Peace on Twitterit appears that Apple’s M4 chip is equipped with four Thunderbolt controllers, compared to two on the M3 chip and earlier. This could mean that Apple could deliver 4 Thunderbolt ports on the upcoming M4 iMac.

WiFi 7

Apple will likely support the Wi-Fi 7 standard on the upcoming M4 iMac, as it did on the iPhone 16 range.

Wi-Fi 7 supports speeds of up to 46 Gbps, which is over five times faster than Wi-Fi 6E’s 9 Gbps. Wi-Fi 7 also works on 320 MHz channels and supports the 6 GHz band, which greatly reduces interference and signal jams.

Wrap up

Although it’s a minor refresh, there are a few things to look forward to if you’re in the market for a new one iMac. Unfortunately, there are no rumors suggesting that Apple is still working on a larger iMac or some kind of iMac Pro. At least according to Apple 24″ iMac is all they will do for now.

It’s definitely a bummer if you don’t like it 24″ iMac for any reason, whether it’s the size, the design, or the fact that you need an external power supply. Apple recommends that you buy one Studio Display and pair it with any Mac if you want the experience of a larger iMac.
