Magic: The Gathering reveals huge 2025 with spectacular Final Fantasy collaboration

Magic: The Gathering has been in a bit of a strange place for the past few months and big changes abound that should set the game’s course for years to come.

The biggest announcement is that The universe beyond line will now be compliant and legal in all MTG formats going forward, including Standard. This is a huge change from the current approach of releases under the banner, which have been segregated into different game formats up until this point.

For those who don’t know, Universes Beyond uses franchises and intellectual property from outside the MTG multiverse. In recent years, these offerings have grown to include everything from Fallout to The Lord of the Ringswith the latter being the source of the coveted, unique One Ring card.

The launch of Basics in November is also a big part of the company’s plans, which sets the course for at least 2029. To accommodate the broad church that Wizards of the Coast goes for, only three Multiverse sets will be released each year.

In total, there are six standard-legal sets on the way, including three Multiverse sets, along with three Universes Beyond editions. With MagicCon now well under way, here’s everything you need to know about the confirmed lineups, along with some comments from the team delivered in a private briefing to members of the press.

Innistrad: Remastered (January 24)

Innistered Remastered MTG set

The turn to Gothic in the early 2010s was an interesting time, and many impressive ideas undoubtedly flew under the radar. Innistrad: Remastered brings it up again, with a new Collector booster-only “Headliner” card, in this case a serialized movie poster Edgar Markov.

Aetherdrift (February 14)

Aetherdrift MTG set

Aetherdrift mixes high-octane motorcycle action from Tron, with Fury Road-like mayhem from Mad Max. If that doesn’t convince you that this should be a winning TCG set, we don’t know what will. With some extra cool theming around Aether Spark, Aetherdrift is immersed in the game’s wider story.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm (April 11)

The Tarkir MTG set

Going back to the plane of Tarkir probably won’t be something any Magic player would object to, and the return of some familiar characters and monsters won’t hurt it one bit. With dynamic clan-based gameplay and some terrifying new dragons, it should prove popular with MTG purists.

Final Fantasy (June 13)

The Final Fantasy MTG set

The Final Fantasy Universe Beyond set is likely to draw a lot of attention ahead of its release next year. Fortunately for longtime fans, it seems the level of collaboration between the two art teams is unusually deep this time around.

“If you draw from the other side of the franchise, you see artwork from Magic artists alongside the classic illustrations from legendary Final Fantasy artists, as well as brand new breathtaking works made especially for this set,” confirmed lead designer Mark Rosewater.

Edge of Eternities (August 1)

The Edge of Eternities MTG set

Thematically, Edge of Eternities looks to be one of the most interesting sets in recent years. Taking players beyond the known multiverse, it dives into a new realm known as the Solthera System. Tezzeret makes his long-awaited return, appearing for the first time since Hour of Devastation took place in 2017.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (TBA 2025)

Marvel's Spider-Man MTG Set

As previously confirmed at NYCC, Spider-Man will be the first full-scale crossover collaboration between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. No specific date for this one yet, although Fall seems like the likely arrival date for this highly anticipated release.

Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants (TBA 2025)

Pongebob MTG Secret Lair set

In the most hilariously scheduled release of the lot, everyone’s favorite mushroom is making its way over to MTG as part of a Secret Lair crossover. Not too much in the way of confirmed cards or details about this set yet, so keep your fingers crossed for a handsome Squidward appearance.
