Prime Minister’s aides clarify position on Najib’s 1MDB apology

PETALING JAYA: An aide to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that the prime minister only acknowledged Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s apology over the 1MDB scandal.

Kamil Munim, Anwar’s political secretary in his role as finance minister, raised claims that suggested Anwar had accepted the apology.

“The question of whether the prime minister accepted the apology does not arise,” he said.

Kamil stressed that Anwar said the apology was “well received”, but this does not change the fact that the country suffered significant damage from the 1MDB scandal.

He added that arguments defending the 1MDB incident have become invalid after Najib’s apology.

“No one is above the law. The fair process should and must be maintained,” stressed Kamil.

On 24 October, Najib apologized to all Malaysians for the 1MDB scandal, which unfolded during his time as prime minister and finance minister.

Najib explained that he issued the apology, read by his son Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib, after reflecting on his 26 months in prison, amid recent developments regarding 1MDB.

Asked about Najib’s apology, Anwar simply replied: “Terima baik (well received).”
