State education report shows improvements for local schools

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The state report card was just released, and schools in our area, like Jefferson County, are showing improvement. Last year, the Jefferson County school system scored a total of 81, and this year they have increased that score to 82.

Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin expressed pride in this progress but emphasized that there is still more to do.

70% of Jefferson County schools have made improvements. Six schools received an A grade and four schools increased their scores by 10 points.

Some of the schools that received A’s include Bagley Elementary, Lipscomb Elementary and Bryan Elementary. Chalkville Elementary and Concord Elementary also improved by more than 10 points. Other schools that improved their letter grades include several that are still struggling. For example, Center Point High and McAdory High have D grades.

Dr. Gonsoulin mentioned that they have already developed a game plan to address these issues.

“It tells us we have room to improve,” says Gonsoulin. “We have eight priority schools, and although it is fewer than last year, it is still one too many. We will work together to develop a school improvement plan. We have been implementing school improvement plans over the last few years, and what we are doing is working.”
