Regina weather: City releases snowfall plan

Many parts of Saskatchewan will be hit with another round of wintry weather on Saturday, and Regina is no exception, with up to 25 centimeters of snow expected to accumulate.

The City of Regina released its Snowfall Action Plan ahead of the frigid chaos, detailing how they will manage roads and sidewalks.

According to their plan released on social mediacrews will be out plowing priority roads during “storm mode,” when the snow begins to fall. These priority routes include emergency routes, major intersections, high-speed routes and transit stops.

During storm mode, crews will also cordon off roadways that are sensitive to traffic. Sidewalk plowing will also take place as well as de-icing on high-traffic roads. Crews will also fill sandboxes during the first mode.

Within 24-36 hours after the snowfall stops, crews will enter a systematic plowing phase. This will include plowing high traffic roads, hospital roads, transit roads, downtown streets, bike lanes and beginning pavement plowing.

Within 36-48 hours after the snowfall stops, crews will continue the systematic plowing phase, which will include plowing lower volume roads, as well as industrial and commercial roads. Crews will also plow school drop-off zones, gravel roads and continue plowing the sidewalk.

After that, a maintenance phase begins that will continue to prepare for the next major snowfall event. Maintenance will continue throughout Regina in problem areas and ice control will be ongoing.

Post-storm cleanup will also begin after the snowfall stops, with crews continuing to monitor conditions throughout the city and remove snowbanks based on bank height.

Snow roads can also be declared after the snowfall has stopped.
