COP29 live: UN climate negotiations on the brink of collapse as countries run out of money

Key nations ‘excluded’ from discussions on draft agreementpublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time

I just heard from a source close to AOSIS – which is a group of small island states that are very vulnerable to climate change.

They told me that the minister who heads AOSIS in meeting room 3 (where the final deal is being discussed) has told the room that his group was excluded from writing the latest text. As a reminder, this text is not yet published so we have not seen it.

“AOSIS and many of the subgroups within the G77 were not part of the discussion that gave rise to these unbalanced texts,” AOSIS president Cedric Schuster told ministers, according to my source.

The G77 is a large group of developing countries.

“We have asked for space from you for engagement in the process with you to facilitate this discussion,” Schuster continued.

Just a reminder that the COP negotiations are supposed to be done by consensus, with all nations agreeing on the final agreement.

When I asked if they could walk away from these talks, my source said “that’s up to the leaders of the nations”.
