6p heating trick to save ‘huge’ £1.63 per hour as temperatures drop

As temperatures drop significantly across the UK, many will struggle to justify turning on the heating thanks to the cost. As it is almost Christmas, some will try to avoid it, and instead try to save money for presents, by using hooded blankets, bed socks and hot water bottles.

While these may help temporarily, they may not feel like the best permanent solution, and as a result, people are taking to social media to share their best money-saving hacks, and work out how much money you could actually save yourself itself by making some changes.

A TikTok user @vcw_19 said that there would be no more amplification of the heating thanks to the product she recommended.

So what was she raving about that she even said changed her life? It’s the humble electric blanket.

She claimed that she has been feeling “so cold” recently, so she had turned up the heat to warm a room at the back of the house, and didn’t get much sun during daylight hours during the winter.

As a result, she was worried about her heating bill, but said she didn’t “have to touch the heat” thanks to the electric blanket.

She noted that the prices were changing for them, and she paid £17 for hers, but “hate being cold” so it was just a matter of making a purchase.

The woman said, “I think this is probably the purchase of the year for me,” and when someone commented that they wanted to get one, she encouraged them to take the plunge and treat themselves.

“I need one of these, my heating blows all day and night, it’s so cold,” they complained.

She replied: “I looked up heating costs on average £1.69 per hour. Electric blankets are about 6p per hour. That’s a huge saving!”

On RedditOn the ‘Personal Economy’ forum someone pointed out that they “heat the person not the room”, so it’s much more energy efficient than trying to heat a whole room.

On the “Stingy” forum, someone praised theirs. They wrote: “I bought the Dreamland Intelliheat this year after two years of agonizing over the cost and feeling miserable all winter. I chose the faux fur coat model because I work from home and wanted a heated option that I could use around the house, not just in the bed and it is by far the best thing i have bought for my house.

“It’s thick and warm even without the heat on. I’ve yet to go past setting 3. And according to my smart meter it costs 0.01p an hour to drive. My gas is about £1 every 20 minutes when i get up to temperature, and since i live on a humid rented terrace, it clicks back forever.

“I do not regret my purchase and would highly recommend to anyone wanting to heat the person not the property. I leave the upstairs windows open for the damp/mould and have a dehumidifier when this is not possible and helps with the laundry drying time.”

Another wrote: “I think it’s definitely worth getting. Personally, I prefer a heated bed mattress (the kind that’s like a duvet) to an electric blanket with cords or straps – they’re a bit cheaper, but well worth it upgrade to the mattress pad and not much more money. The ones with strings or straps never stay in place properly.”
