Alan and Maureen Butler met at Bilston Carnival on a youth club outing and married at St Patrick’s Church in Walsall on 21 November 1959. They are celebrating their Blue Sapphire milestone.

They have three children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren between them and many will be in attendance at Darlaston Labor Club as they celebrate family, friends and the sanctity of marriage.

After marrying, the couple – who were born just a month apart – moved in with Alan’s parents and settled in the Bentley area.

Alan, who is almost 85, was a career electrician while Maureen, who is 85, worked in a woolen shop in Walsall and factories making glass and glue.

They enjoyed a meal out on the anniversary itself ahead of their big celebration tonight (Saturday).

When asked what the secret to a happy marriage is, Alan and Maureen agreed it’s getting along and laughing together.
