Mexican immigrant gets 40 years in prison for cartel-related drug trafficking

A Mexican drug dealer with links to a cartel was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison.

Adriana Melendez-Calvillo, 43, pleaded guilty to a “criminal information charging conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and money laundering” last November, a US Justice Department press release said. She is a Mexican citizen who is in the United States illegally, according to prosecutors.

During Melendez-Calvillo’s sentencing Wednesday, a federal agent testified that she had ties to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, which is a transnational drug-trafficking organization.

Court evidence introduced text messages that suggested Melendez-Calvillo received shipments of meth, cocaine and other drugs directly from a supplier in Mexico and that she electronically transferred $828,094 in proceeds to individuals in the country, prosecutors said.

Court evidence also revealed that Melendez-Calvillo was involved in the trafficking of “at least 1,000 pounds of cocaine, 41 kg of methamphetamine and 7.8 kg of ice methamphetamine,” according to the release.

One of Melendez-Calvillo’s co-conspirators, David Garcia, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine last November, the release states. His sentencing is scheduled for January. Another co-conspirator, Omar Gilliam, was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and is currently awaiting trial.

Garcia and Gilliam both played roles in a meth transaction with Melendez-Calvillo, according to prosecutors.
